Spring is springing...
...nearly!
Hellooo! Here’s my spring newsletter, about my work and the artist support services I offer…
Residency
This month I will be opening the doors of my studio practice to the public, at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton, as an ‘artist pop-up’ in response to the work of Greenlandic-Danish artist Pia Arke, whose work is on show there in Silences and Stories, (until 11 May). My work connects to Arke’s through themes of self-portraiture, feminism and landscape, and use of archives.
Discovering Arke’s work has sent me down a research rabbit warren of learning about Greenland, its colonial history and current relationship with Denmark, and Inuit culture. I will be sharing what I’ve found on Instagram over the next few weeks.
In the gallery’s Active Space, I will be constructing landscape ‘elements’ from paper and found material and inviting visitors to select elements to create their own landscape, and then choose either to photograph themselves, photograph me, or have me photograph them, as a gentle way to question what it means to occupy a landscape and represent oneself, or be represented, within it. The image above is a maquette playing with how these elements might work.
Please come and participate! The residency starts tomorrow (I know! Too much going on with work and home recently, and this newsletter is one of many things that has fallen through the gaps) Friday 15th, Saturday 16th, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st March, and the gallery is open 11am-5pm each day (please be aware there may be times when I will be working with specific visiting groups).
Exhibition recommendations
Time for making has been hard to come by so far this year, but I have been lucky to see a number of exhibitions which have made an impact: Monica Sjöö at Modern Art Oxford, James Paddock’s Life Could Be Done So Much Better at Exeter Phoenix, Michelle Williams Gamaker’s Silver Wave at RAMM, Exeter, and Outi Pieski at Tate St. Ives (pictured above). Each of these has fed in to my current research and developing practice around feminism, landscape and colonialism.

Artist Support
February was a busy month for Artist Support events: I had a lovely time with Isle of Wight Creative Network members in Cowes, talking about work-life balance, strategies, tools and resources (including the brilliant Self-Care Checklist for Precarious Workers by Rachel Dobbs, in the image above); and at the CHAOS Network, delivering a Masterclass session with SoCo Music Project director Matt Salvage, sharing perspectives on how creative practitioners can access support from Southampton’s cultural organisations. Some of the resources I shared include:
rehearsal space, mentoring and seed funding from MAST
equipment hire, networking and screening opportunities from City Eye
space to test out new work, advice and bursaries from ‘a space’ arts
As well as hosting and delivering events, I work one-to-one with creative practitioners of all kinds to plan projects, overcome obstacles and get funding for their work. I do this face-to-face, in my studio in Southampton, and online via video call. My rate for this work is £50 per hour.
